How OMCP is Raising the Bar, and Why We’re Excited

Earning an OMCP Certification has been the goal for many Market Motive participants and teams. The industry recognized standard lends credibility to agencies, boosts resumes for individuals, and helps pre-vet applicants for hiring managers.

Historically, passing any Level 3 Practitioner Course or Level 4 Master Course automatically qualified an individual for OMCP. We’re excited to announce that starting February 28, 2015, the bar is being raised.

So why are we so excited?
There’s been a increasing realization that our industry needs t-shaped marketers, meaning marketers with a wide breadth of knowledge across all disciplines and a depthful knowledge about one or two specific disciplines.

Market Motive has been touting this cause since our founding. Most of our participants take all the Level 2 Fundamentals Courses for breadth, paired with two Level 3 Practitioner or Level 4 Master Courses for depth.

We’ve always mapped this as the path of a successful, capable marketer – and we’re so excited that OMCP agrees and that their new standards map similarly.

What’s the big picture?
With the new standards for OMCP, those approved with be among the creme de la creme of digital marketers. Granted, it is a higher bar to get over, and it may even frustrate some people to have the finish line pulled back, but ultimately, it’s good for the industry and it’s good for the individuals.

Nobody finds value in a VIP club that has easy access – that’s just a club. Success is defined by distinction, and moving yourself into the elite. By clearing this higher bar, you and your team can prove that you’re competent in the industry not just in one specific discipline.

You can be hired with confidence, and your clients will have peace of mind that you know the landscape of digital marketing and have multiple tools in your tool belt. No more, “when you’re a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” You certifiably know how to choose the right tool for the job.

What are the specifics?
Check out the OMCP website for the specifics. The changes will be rolling out slowly. As of today, this is what the roll-out looks like, but make sure to check the website for details or updates.

Between now and February 28, 2015, you can either pass the OMCP Exam or pass an approved course to gain an OMCP Certification. This means a Level 3 Practitioner or Level 4 Master – so if you’re enrolled, finish up and apply to OMCP!

Between March 1, 2015 and July 1, 2015, the OMCP Exam (which tests the t-shaped marketer!) will become mandatory. Market Motive courses will help to prepare you for this test. You will also need to pass an approved course or have work experience.

After July 1, 2015, you will need to pass the OMCP Exam, have a post-secondary degree (or global equivalent), and have a combination of either work experience + passing a course, or additional work experience.

What if the bar is too high?
If you’re worried the bar has been set too high – don’t fret! The OMCA Certification may be a better match.
